Heel pain treatment depends on the cause, severity, and how long symptoms have lasted. Common options include activity changes, supportive footwear, stretching, custom orthotics, medication, physical therapy, and targeted podiatric care. A San Antonio podiatrist can examine your foot, identify the source, and create a safe plan for lasting relief.

          What causes heel pain?

Heel pain is a symptom rather than a diagnosis. It may develop gradually from repeated stress or appear suddenly after an injury. The location and timing of your pain can provide useful clues.

          Common causes include:

           Plantar fasciitis:

Irritation of the thick band of tissue supporting the arch, often causing pain with the first steps in the morning.

           Achilles tendonitis:

Inflammation or irritation near the back of the heel, frequently linked to sports, overuse, or tight calf muscles.

           Heel spurs:

Calcium deposits that may develop after long-term strain. The spur itself is not always the source of pain.

           Stress injuries:

Small cracks or bone irritation caused by repetitive impact.

           Nerve irritation or bursitis:

Less common causes that may create burning, tingling, swelling, or pain at rest.

When should you see a podiatrist for heel pain?

Schedule an evaluation if pain lasts more than a few days, keeps returning, limits walking, or does not improve with simple home care. Earlier care may help prevent a minor problem from becoming a long-term condition.

Seek prompt medical attention when heel pain follows a significant injury or occurs with severe swelling, bruising, numbness, redness, warmth, fever, or an inability to put weight on the foot.

A podiatrist can review your symptoms, observe how you walk, check your range of motion, and perform imaging when appropriate. This evaluation helps distinguish plantar fasciitis from tendon, bone, nerve, or joint problems.

          Five ways to support recovery

          1. Reduce aggravating activity

Temporarily decrease running, jumping, long walks, or other activities that sharply increase pain. You do not necessarily need complete rest. Low-impact movement may be appropriate, depending on the cause.

          2. Choose supportive shoes

Wear comfortable shoes with cushioning, a stable sole, and enough room for your toes. Avoid worn-out footwear, thin flats, and extended barefoot walking on hard floors. Replace athletic shoes when their support and cushioning have noticeably deteriorated.

          3. Use gentle stretching

Calf and plantar fascia stretches may reduce tension around the heel. Stretch slowly and consistently, without bouncing or forcing painful movement. A clinician or physical therapist can show you which exercises fit your condition.

          4. Consider orthotic support

          5. Follow a personalized treatment plan

If symptoms persist, professional treatment may include physical therapy, bracing, medication guidance, shock wave therapy, or other conservative options. The right combination depends on your examination and diagnosis.

Which heel pain treatment is right for you?

There is no single best treatment for every case. A practical approach is to match care to the pattern of symptoms:

           Morning heel pain:

Stretching, supportive footwear, activity adjustments, and evaluation for plantar fasciitis may help.

           Pain after sports:

Rest from aggravating activity, gradual return-to-play planning, and assessment for a sports injury are important. See our

A podiatric examination may be needed to rule out a stress injury, nerve problem, or another condition.

Avoid copying someone else’s treatment plan. A shoe insert, stretch, or exercise that helps one person may worsen another person’s symptoms if the underlying cause is different.

Can shock wave therapy help heel pain?

Shock wave therapy, also called extracorporeal pulse activation technology or EPAT, uses targeted sound waves to stimulate the treatment area. It may be considered for some persistent soft-tissue conditions after a thorough evaluation and when conservative care has not provided enough improvement.

What happens at a heel pain appointment?

At South Texas Podiatry, your visit may include a discussion of when symptoms began, what activities affect them, your footwear, prior injuries, and previous treatment. The doctors may examine your foot and ankle, assess flexibility and strength, and recommend diagnostic imaging if needed.

Your plan may begin with conservative care and clear instructions for home treatment. Follow-up helps determine whether symptoms are improving and whether the plan should be adjusted. The goal is not merely to reduce pain temporarily, but to address contributing factors and help you return to normal activity safely.

How to Start the School Year on the Right Foot

Prepare for the new school year with our expert guide to pediatric foot health. Learn about proper footwear, injury prevention, and when to see a podiatrist.

Starting the new school year on the right foot means focusing on proper footwear, early detection of issues like flat feet, and preventing sports injuries. A successful academic year begins with ensuring your child's feet are supported, pain-free, and ready for increased activity in the classroom and on the field.

Why is foot health important for the school year?

As the summer heat begins to wane and the school buses return to the streets of San Antonio, parents often focus on school supplies and new clothes. However, one of the most critical aspects of back-to-school preparation is ensuring your child has healthy, pain-free feet. Foot health is the literal foundation of a child's physical well-being. When a child experiences foot discomfort, it doesn't just stay in the feet; it can affect their posture, their ability to concentrate in class, and their willingness to participate in physical education or recess. At South Texas Podiatry, we see a significant increase in

A child's foot is not just a smaller version of an adult foot. It is a complex structure of growing bones, ligaments, and tendons that are particularly susceptible to strain. During the school year, children are more active than they might have been during the summer months. Between walking through long hallways, participating in PE, and joining after-school sports, their feet are under constant pressure. If a child has an undiagnosed condition like

or high arches, this increased activity can lead to chronic fatigue and pain. By prioritizing foot health now, you are setting your child up for a year of physical success and comfort.

What are the best shoes for school?

Selecting the right footwear is perhaps the most important decision a parent can make regarding their child’s foot health. While trendy designs and popular brands are often at the top of a student's wish list, the priority should always be support and fit. The best shoes for school are those that provide a stable platform for the foot while allowing for natural movement. When you go shoe shopping, it is best to do so in the late afternoon. This is because feet naturally swell throughout the day, and you want to ensure the shoes remain comfortable even at their largest size. Always have your child’s feet professionally measured, as sizes can vary significantly between different brands.

When evaluating a potential pair of school shoes, consider the following:

Ensure there is a thumb’s width of space between the longest toe and the end of the shoe.

Look for a firm heel counter that provides stability and prevents the foot from sliding.

Check for a flexible forefoot that allows the shoe to bend where the foot naturally bends.

Opt for breathable materials like leather or high-quality mesh to prevent moisture buildup.

Avoid completely flat shoes like ballet flats or flimsy flip-flops for daily wear.

Properly fitting shoes help prevent a variety of issues, from simple blisters to more complex problems like

Quality footwear for students must balance durability with orthopedic support. A common mistake is buying shoes that are slightly too large, hoping the child will "grow into them." However, oversized shoes cause the foot to slide, which leads to friction, blisters, and instability. Conversely, shoes that are too tight can compress the toes, potentially leading to

or neuromas later in life. The construction of the shoe should offer arch support that matches the child's foot type. For children with very flat feet, a shoe with a rigid midsole is often necessary to prevent the foot from collapsing inward during the gait cycle.

Beyond fit, the lacing system is vital. Laces allow for a customized fit that can be adjusted based on the thickness of the child’s socks or any minor swelling. Velcro is a great alternative for younger children, provided it can be tightened sufficiently to secure the foot. The outsole of the shoe should provide adequate traction to prevent slips and falls on polished school floors or playground equipment. By investing in high-quality footwear at the start of the year, you reduce the risk of

The term "growing pains" is frequently used by parents to describe any leg or foot discomfort a child feels, but it is often a misnomer. While children do experience genuine growth-related sensations, persistent pain is never normal and should not be dismissed. True growing pains typically occur in the evening or night and affect both legs, usually in the thighs or calves. If your child is experiencing pain specifically in the heel, the arch, or only in one foot, it is likely not growing pains but an underlying mechanical issue. One common condition we treat at South Texas Podiatry is Sever’s disease, which causes significant

. Athlete’s foot is a fungal infection that thrives in warm, damp environments and causes itching, redness, and peeling skin. Plantar warts are caused by the Human Papillomavirus (HPV) and often appear as small, grainy growths on the soles of the feet. Both conditions are highly contagious and can spread easily if children walk barefoot in communal areas. Encouraging your child to wear shower shoes or sandals in the locker room is a simple but effective preventive measure.

Preparing for the school year involves more than just buying the right books and backpacks; it requires a proactive approach to your child's physical health. By selecting supportive footwear, monitoring for signs of pain beyond typical growth, and maintaining proper hygiene, you can prevent most common school-related foot issues. Remember that foot pain is not a normal part of childhood and should always be evaluated by a professional. Ensuring your child's feet are healthy will improve their focus, athletic performance, and overall happiness throughout the academic year.

Discover how custom orthotics can relieve heel pain, improve posture, and enhance athletic performance. Learn why precision-crafted inserts from South Texas Podiatry beat over-the-counter options for long-term foot health.

Custom orthotics are medical shoe inserts designed specifically for your feet to correct biomechanical imbalances, provide superior support, and alleviate pain from conditions like plantar fasciitis. Unlike store-bought inserts, they are precision-crafted to match your unique foot structure, improving overall mobility, comfort, and long-term joint health.

are in a completely different league. They are prescription medical devices tailored to the exact contours of your feet. Think of them like prescription glasses for your feet; while a generic pair of magnifying glasses might help a little, only a specific prescription allows you to see clearly and comfortably all day long.

Custom orthotics work by correcting the way your foot interacts with the ground. At South Texas Podiatry, we analyze your gait (the way you walk) and your foot’s structure to identify where the pressure points or alignment issues lie. By redistributing weight and supporting the arches, these inserts can stop the chain reaction of pain that often travels from the feet up to the ankles, knees, hips, and even the lower back.

Improving your foot health starts with stabilization. Many people suffer from foot fatigue simply because their feet are working too hard to compensate for structural issues. Custom orthotics provide the necessary foundation to let your muscles and tendons relax. By placing the foot in its optimal neutral position, we can significantly reduce the strain on the

It is tempting to grab a pair of mass-produced inserts at the grocery store, but it’s important to understand what you’re actually buying. Over-the-counter (OTC) inserts are made for a "general" foot shape, which doesn't really exist. Every foot has its own unique nuances—one foot might even be slightly different from the other! OTC options are primarily for cushioning, not for correction.

Custom orthotics are crafted after a thorough examination by specialists like

. We use advanced diagnostic tools to create a 3D map of your foot. This ensures that the support is exactly where you need it and nowhere that you don't. While the upfront cost of custom orthotics is higher, their durability is far superior. A pair of custom inserts can last several years, whereas most drugstore brands need to be replaced every few months because the foam compresses and loses its efficacy.

Who Needs Custom Orthotics for Daily Relief?

If you find yourself dreading the walk from your car to your office, or if you feel like you need to sit down after only twenty minutes of standing, you are a prime candidate for custom support. Foot pain is never "normal," even as we age. It is usually a sign that something is mechanically wrong.

Key Advantages of Choosing Custom Orthotics

One of the biggest advantages of custom orthotics is their versatility. They aren't just for orthopedic shoes anymore. Modern materials allow us to create slim-profile orthotics that fit into dress shoes, high heels, and even narrow athletic cleats. This means you don't have to sacrifice style for comfort.

Another key advantage is injury prevention. When your feet are properly aligned, the rest of your body follows suit. This reduces the risk of

. For many of our patients, the greatest advantage is simply getting their lives back—being able to go on that hike, chase after grandkids, or finish a shift at work without agonizing pain.

Can Custom Orthotics Help With Sports Injuries?

Athletes put an incredible amount of stress on their lower extremities. Every time your foot hits the ground during a run, it absorbs several times your body weight in force. If your foot is slightly misaligned, that force isn't absorbed correctly, leading to

          Achilles tendonitis

          or stress fractures.

Custom orthotics for athletes are designed to handle these high-impact forces. They help control the motion of the foot, preventing excessive rolling inward (pronation) or outward (supination). This control is vital for maintaining proper form and avoiding overuse injuries. Whether you are a marathon runner or a weekend pickleball player, having the right support can mean the difference between staying on the court or being stuck on the sidelines.

Long-Term Impact on Body Alignment and Mobility

Your feet are the foundation of your entire body. When the foundation is tilted or unstable, the "building" above it (your knees, hips, and spine) has to shift to stay upright. Over time, this compensation leads to wear and tear on the joints. Many people find that their chronic lower back pain actually clears up once their feet are properly supported by custom orthotics.

By investing in your alignment today, you are preventing the need for more invasive treatments later. At South Texas Podiatry, we focus on conservative care first. Orthotics are one of the most effective non-invasive tools we have to keep you mobile. When combined with other therapies like

Your feet are the foundation of your entire body — when they’re not properly supported, it can lead to pain not just in your feet, but in your ankles, knees, hips, and back, too. That’s where custom orthotics come in!

          What Are Custom Orthotics?

Custom orthotics are medical-grade shoe inserts that are specifically designed for your unique feet, gait, and needs. Unlike over-the-counter insoles, custom orthotics are crafted based on a detailed assessment by your podiatrist, ensuring the perfect fit and support for your lifestyle.

Who Can Benefit from Custom Orthotics?

Custom orthotics can help people with:
✅ Flat feet or high arches
✅ Plantar fasciitis or heel pain
✅ Bunions or hammertoes
✅ Arthritis
✅ Sports injuries
✅ Foot, ankle, knee, hip, or lower back pain caused by poor alignment

          How Do They Work?

Custom orthotics work by redistributing pressure and correcting misalignments, which helps your feet function properly and comfortably. They can also help prevent future problems by providing the support you need with every step.

          Ready to Feel the Difference?

Your feet are the foundation of your body, supporting you with every step you take. We understand that maintaining foot health is crucial to your overall well-being and mobility. In honor of April being National Foot Health Awareness Month, this blog explores why foot health should never be overlooked and provides tips for keeping your feet healthy.

           Why Foot Health Matters

The human foot is a complex structure of 26 bones, 33 joints, and over 100 muscles, tendons, and ligaments. This intricate design allows for movements such as walking, running, and jumping. However, it also means that many things can go wrong if not cared for properly.

Poor foot health can lead to a range of issues from simple aches and pains to more severe conditions like plantar fasciitis or diabetic neuropathy. Moreover, problems in your feet can affect other parts of your body, including your knees, hips, and back.

           Tips for Maintaining Healthy Feet

            Regular Check-ups:

Just like regular dentist visits, regular check-ups with a podiatrist, especially during National Foot Health Awareness Month, can help catch foot problems before they become serious.

            Proper Footwear:

Wear shoes that fit well and provide good support. Different activities require different types of shoes – what you wear for running is not suitable for a day at work.

            Foot Hygiene:

Wash your feet daily, dry them thoroughly to prevent infections, and change socks daily.

            Stay Active:

Regular exercise helps keep your feet and body healthy. Remember to stretch your feet and ankles before and after workouts.

            Manage Your Weight:

Extra weight puts additional pressure on your feet, increasing the risk of foot disorders.

           Common Foot Conditions and Treatments

            Plantar Fasciitis:

Often felt as heel pain, treated with exercises, proper footwear, and sometimes orthotics.

            Bunions:

Misaligned big toe joints that can become swollen and tender. Treatment options include wearing comfortable shoes, pads, and in severe cases, surgery.

            Diabetic Foot Care:

People with diabetes need to take extra care of their feet as poor blood circulation and nerve damage can lead to serious foot problems.

We believe in a proactive approach to foot health. Whether you're an athlete, a busy professional, or enjoying retirement, taking good care of your feet is a step toward a healthier life. Here's the rewritten blog with all specific names and locations removed:

A hammertoe is a deformity of the toe that causes the middle joint to bend, resembling the shape of a hammer. If you have hammertoes, you should seek medical attention. The sooner you seek treatment, the likelier it is that the problem won't get worse. The podiatrists at our foot and ankle center are here to help with the treatment of hammertoes.

          About Hammertoes

Hammertoes are painful deformities of the toes, and often affect the middle three toes. Initially, hammertoes may be flexible, but over time, they may become rigid and require surgery to straighten the toes. Because hammertoes are progressive, they should receive early medical attention, as they won't get better without some kind of intervention.

          Causes of Hammertoes

Some causes of hammertoe are poorly fitting shoes, high heels, foot injuries, and medical conditions that affect the nerves and muscles, such as diabetes and arthritis. Women are more likely to develop hammertoes than men. The risk of developing a hammertoe increases with age. Genetics can also play a role in hammertoes, as they may run in families. Hammertoes can be a serious problem for diabetics and people with poor circulation.

          Symptoms of Hammertoes

Deformity is usually the first symptom of hammertoe. Patients with hammertoes may have calluses or corns on the top of the middle joint of the toes or on the tips of the toes. They may feel pain in their toes and have difficulty finding footwear that is comfortable. At first, they may be able to move and straighten the deformed toes. Over time, they will no longer be able to move the deformed toes.

          Hammertoe Treatments

Padding and taping is the first step in a treatment plan. Padding and taping the hammertoe prominence relieves the stress and pain and allows the patient to continue a normal, active life. Cortisone injections and anti-inflammatory medications can be prescribed to relieve pain and inflammation caused by the deformity. Custom-fitted shoe inserts called orthotics made by your foot doctor may ease your discomfort and prevent the worsening of the deformity. When the hammertoe is not resolved with the above methods, surgery may be necessary.

Find out if the symptoms you're experiencing could be trying to tell you that you have a stress fracture. A stress fracture occurs when a tiny crack in the bone of your foot or ankle develops. More often than not, stress fractures come about over time due to overuse, which is why a lot of athletes experience this problem at some point during their lifetime. Are you wondering if your discomfort could actually be a stress fracture? Our podiatrists are here to help you figure out if it's time to schedule an evaluation.

As mentioned above, this is a problem that commonly plagues athletes and runners because stress fractures often arise from overuse or from performing repetitive movements. Of course, if you suddenly change the intensity or duration of a workout you may also find yourself dealing with this problem. It's important that you are warming up and conditioning your body properly before exercising or adopting a new workout routine. Those with other health problems such as osteoporosis or arthritis may also be prone to stress fractures in the feet and ankles.

What are the symptoms of a stress fracture?

Pain is the number one indicator of a stress fracture. Of course, a lot of injuries and other problems can lead to foot and ankle pain, so you'll want to visit your foot doctor for a proper and comprehensive evaluation to determine the true source of your pain. If you have a stress fracture, pain may get worse when walking or putting weight on the foot, but the pain may subside when resting. The pain may be exacerbated throughout the day depending on your activity level. There may also be some swelling present on the top portion of the foot or around the ankle depending on the location of the stress fracture. The area may also be tender to the touch or there might be some minor bruising. If you suspect that you have a stress fracture, it's important that you schedule an appointment right away so that your condition can be diagnosed and treated as soon as possible to prevent complications.

Does heel pain make walking uncomfortable? The podiatrists at our foot and ankle center share common causes of heel pain and explain what can be done to relieve it.

          Haglund's Deformity

Haglund's deformity, also known as retrocalcaneal bursitis, causes a swollen red bump to develop on the back of your heel. The bursa, a small, fluid-filled sac, helps your Achilles tendon glide over the bones in your ankle joint easily. You can develop Haglund's deformity if you wear shoes that rub against your heel or exercise more intensely or longer than normal. The condition often goes away if you choose shoes that don't irritate your heel. Soaking your heel in warm water, applying ice packs, and taking over-the-counter pain medication can help reduce pain. If your symptoms continue, you may benefit from physical therapy, ultrasound treatment, corticosteroid injections, or orthotics.

          Calluses

Painful calluses can develop on your heel if you wear shoes that don't fit well or if one of the metatarsal bones in your foot is longer than the other. Although you can remove shallow calluses with a pumice stone, it's a good idea to schedule an appointment with your podiatrist if your callus is thick or you have diabetes. If a difference in the length of your bones causes frequent calluses, you may benefit from surgery to lift and realign the longer bone.

          Plantar Fasciitis

An inflammation of the plantar fascia, a thick band of connective tissue you can feel if you press on the sole of your foot, is a common cause of heel pain. The condition is more likely to occur if you run or are on your feet for long periods of time, are overweight, or have an arch problem. If your pain is mild, you may notice some improvement if you stay off your feet, apply ice packs, and perform a few stretching exercises. Corticosteroid injections, night splints, and heel inserts are often recommended by foot doctors to treat plantar fasciitis symptoms. In severe cases, surgery may be needed.

Are you concerned about your heel pain? Call our office today to schedule an appointment with one of our podiatrists. We are here to help you get back on your feet.

Keep Your Foot Fungus from Spreading to Your Partner

Prevent foot fungus from spreading to your partner with expert tips. Consult our podiatrists for effective treatments and hygiene practices.

Here's the rewritten blog with all specific names and locations removed:

Have foot fungus? Fungal infections are very common. Studies show that foot infections like toenail fungus and athlete's foot do spread from person to person. The podiatrists at our foot and ankle center offer treatments for fungal infections. Here's how to keep your foot fungus from spreading to your partner.

          1. See a podiatrist for treatment.

If you think you may have foot fungus, book an appointment with your podiatrist right away. A podiatrist can figure out if you have foot fungus. The doctor will be able to tell by looking at the skin on your feet. The doctor may scrape off a skin sample to test for fungus. Your podiatrist may suggest using an antifungal ointment, powder, lotion, or spray.

          2. Cover up your fungal infection.

If you live with your partner, do this every day. Fungal infections can be spread from person to person by touching. Keep the fungal infection covered until it has been treated. Don't cover the area too tightly. It's important to keep the area dry and cool as you treat the foot fungus.

          3. Practice good hygiene.

By practicing good hygiene, you may be able to keep your foot fungus from spreading to your partner. Wash and dry your feet regularly. Make sure that you wash your hands any time that you may have touched your own fungal infection. Keeping your feet dry and clean is a simple way to prevent foot fungus from spreading to your partner.

          4. Avoid walking barefoot.

Wearing shoes is a simple way to prevent foot fungus from spreading to your partner. If you have foot fungus, walking around without shoes will increase the chance that you will spread it to your partner. Make sure your partner protects their feet at home.

          5. Don't share your personal items.

Don't share any personal care items such as shoes, towels, clothing, socks, nail clippers, nail files, antiperspirant, or razors with your partner. A fungal infection of the foot can be spread by indirect contact with an infected individual's personal care items.

Get effective bunion treatments, including custom orthotics & surgery options. Contact us for personalized care today!

Tired of that bunion? A bunion is a bony bump that forms on the joint connecting the big toe. Bunions can be extremely painful. The podiatrists at our foot and ankle center offer a range of specialized treatments for bunions. Read on to learn about four treatment options for bunions.

          1. Taping and Padding

           - Taping and padding can ease your symptoms. Your foot doctor can pad and tape your foot in a normal position. This will reduce pain and stress on your bunion. Taping and padding also prevent bunions from getting worse.

          2. Custom Orthotics

           - Orthotic devices are used to treat a variety of foot problems. Orthotic devices are molded pieces of rubber, leather, or other material that are inserted into a shoe. Orthotic devices can be helpful in treating bunions. They can help take pressure off your toes and alleviate your pain. You can get custom-made orthotic devices from your podiatrist.

          3. Suitable Footwear

           - It is recommended that you wear flat or low-heeled, wide-fitting shoes if you have a bunion. High-heel shoes can make your bunion worse by putting excessive pressure on your toes. Footwear made from soft leather is ideal because it will relieve pressure on your bunion.

          4. Bunion Surgery

           - Surgery may be recommended for your bunion if your symptoms are severe enough to warrant such intervention. The type of surgery performed depends on the severity of the bunion and the patient's general health, age, and activity level.
